Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

Didn't see this on here, but there is a new marathon coming to Virginia next year - the Blue Ridge Marathon on the Parkway on April 24 in/near Roanoke. There is also a half that day. I grew up in Bedford and am pretty familiar with this course - it'll be a tough one for sure. I'm looking to make this my second marathon ever (did Richmond 2 years ago), but am waiting to make the decision until after September.

The website touts "The Blue Ridge Marathon is the first marathon to be run almost entirely on the Blue Ridge Parkway". However, if you read the course description and look at the map, it appears that the majority of the race is north of the Parkway towards Roanoke. So much for truth in advertising.... I suspect the cost ($80 prior to 12/31/09 and $100 thereafter) will deter a few folks too.
I was at the Lynchburg Half Marathon this past weekend, and they were all excited about this new race. They all agreed it will be tough, but that the whole town of Roanoke was behind the race and already marketing it. I am not sure what my 2010 running plans are yet, but the race is one possiblity.

I think it's a good thing to see another marathon come into Virginia - and a challenging one at that. It is however around the same time as the Charlottesville marathon which is also a challenging race.

Looking at the course map for the Blue Ridge Parkway marathon makes me a little dizzy - like Gary said most of the run isn't on the parkway.

I can attest that the climbs up to Mill Mountain are pretty tough - I've never run them, but I have biked the climb on an access road up to the top of Mill Mountain. I suspect this is the same climb they will open for the race. It's about 2 miles of switch backs.
I happened to be in the Roanoke area when the Blue Ridge Marathon hit the news and I cut out the articles from the Roanoke Times and the Franklin County papers and the locals are very excited about the race. My take is they will do a great job on this race hoping to build for the future, I hope to run it and it will not be an easy run, very hilly !
