Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

Burgers, fries, cupcakes and sodas could=high cholesterol even when you run!

I got a big surprise today--after never checking--I finally went to the doctor's (and I have to thank wonderful RRRC's Mark Iscool Guzzi for that wise suggestion---and I found out I have very high cholesterol.
I always thought running alone would keep you healthy as I have very low blood pressure, but 6 daily sodas, a daily junk food diet three times a day high in salt, fat, and sugar diet that I'm addicted to is probably to blame for the high cholesterol.
Just wanted to commend those smart enough to not only run but eat on the mostly healthy side.
Now I have to figure out how to break the bad habits which I couldn't even sadly manage to do for Lent, I am that addicted to the junk! :)

Eileen - I'm no expert, and I probably should also have my cholesterol checked - but - I don't think that sugar is responsible for high cholesterol... I'm pretty sure that fats are though. One thing that you should probably watch is "trans fats" - things like partially hydrodgenated oils etc. Stick Margarine is a big culprit, also lots of shortening's (like Crisco). When you go to eat a candy bar - check, and see if it has "partially hydrogenated xxxx" like "partially hydrogenated corn oil" or "partially hydrogenated vegetable oil". Try to avoid margarine. Try to avoid heavy creams. Lots of pre-packaged junk foods use trans fats - and don't be fooled by the label 0 grams "Trans Fats" - this just means that in a serving - there isn't enough "trans fat" to measure one gram... however there might be .05 grams or .9 grams or .1 grams per serving... and you might be eating more than one serving (sometimes companies will make their recommended "serving size" artificially small to get around this.

I believe certain nuts, and other foods have been known to help 'lower cholesterol' - i believe Oats do, and I believe that Almonds do.
Myron,
Thanks for this great info! You are the best! The oats and almonds are the way to go and I need to make a change and do it.
Definitely I pretty much live off packaged junk food or saltier, fried and fat foods from the drive through.
But I do need to set a better example for my children (and I do make sure they eat very healthy) and so I can live longer to take care of them if they need me.
I
6 sodas a day?!?! My heart would explode from all that caffeine.
Maybe they are de-caff... like Sprite or 7-UP
It used to be worse--Dr. Pepper! But I've gone more mild to Pepsi!
It is bad, I'm embarrassed to say! :) And I am probably going to have heart problems if I keep it up! I need to stop and switch to water!!
The caffeine keeps me awake since I don't sleep too much . (My son has autism and has a hard time sleeping. I can get away with 2 hours a night. 4-5 hours is a great night!!)
I am addicted to the bubbles and the flavor, but I need to switch to water which I never drink except when running. The rest of the time, it's soda. I am going to try hard to keep it all water all day long.
Ok you’ve got high cholesterol and that is bad, but how do you eat like that and stay so skinny.
Karl, I wish!! I actually was about 15 lbs. lighter a couple years ago when I first started running, but I got so relaxed thinking life is too short and didn't want to deprive myself of the stuff I like, that I am probably medium weight for a runner these days! I have no more discipline any more sad to say! :)
I need to get a balance! I went too much the other way! :)
If you’re medium then I’m obese. My daily food plan, breakfast weight control Quaker instant oatmeal or yogurt and granola, almond or fruit for snack before and after lunch, lunch turkey sandwich and raw vegetables, dinner is a salad with protein and toasted cheese bread, no snack after dinner. Drinks, coffee, water and maybe one diet soda per day. For pills I take a multi vitamin, glucosamine and Lovaza, which is a prescription omega 3 for my triglycerides.

Not sure why I shared all that, guess I would like to eat more junk, but can’t.
Karl,
You are doing it right--you have a healthy and smart diet to properly fuel your body for your amazing and super excellent kayaking!! And your body is healthier because you are taking good and proper of yourself. I need to follow your great example! If I am worried about life being too short, I am probably making mine shorter through bad habits. You are doing fantastic!
Karl - I'm sorry, but that diet is just depressing!
No way... I'm running out this weekend and loading up on raw vegetables! I've forgotten how much I really like raw veggies, and having them compliment my lunch actually sounds like a good idea.

Thanks Karl.
