Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

Burgers, fries, cupcakes and sodas could=high cholesterol even when you run!

I got a big surprise today--after never checking--I finally went to the doctor's (and I have to thank wonderful RRRC's Mark Iscool Guzzi for that wise suggestion---and I found out I have very high cholesterol.
I always thought running alone would keep you healthy as I have very low blood pressure, but 6 daily sodas, a daily junk food diet three times a day high in salt, fat, and sugar diet that I'm addicted to is probably to blame for the high cholesterol.
Just wanted to commend those smart enough to not only run but eat on the mostly healthy side.
Now I have to figure out how to break the bad habits which I couldn't even sadly manage to do for Lent, I am that addicted to the junk! :)

Don’t get me wrong, I eat some junk on the weekends.

For raw vegetables I consume, three stocks of celery, two heads of cauliflower, 8 green and color peppers and carrots each week. It takes me 1 hour to cut, clean and put into five bags. I like the veggies but also get tired of them.
If you find that depressing I won't dare post what I eat...lol, but hey you gotta do what you gotta do.
People think that cooking is this extraordinary chore, but you can make some very tasty and healthy items in 10 minutes or less! It just takes some "experimenting" and stocking your kitchen full of healthy stuff that complements many dishes, and having an arsenol of spices and flavorings. =) Me being a Texan, I have lots of spices and flavorings that would set most peoples' mouths on fire, but there are other directions you can go with making food taste even better. Anymore, I much prefer stuff I make at home in comparison to the unhealthy stuff bought at drive-thrus and such.

That being said, it's HARD to quit enjoying foods that you like. With many things, it takes a moment of clarity to really commit to cutting those foods out of your diet. Even being diagnosed with diabetes didn't rid me of bad habits completely (just because certain foods are now VERY bad for me doesn't mean I stop liking them!). One day I just got fed up with how I felt after eating certain foods and how those foods were affecting my health and running. In addition to getting fed up, I did some research and found some disturbing information from reliable sources about foods I never thought about twice. All that was what I needed to quit for good and never look back.
And hang in there Eileen! You do so much for everyone and are a very caring and loving mother to your son. Truly an amazing person, no matter the cholesterol results (which of course are a snapshot in time and can be remedied).
Amanda,
You are the nicest and you are the amazing person! Wishing all the wonderful back at you times a million!
I have so much admiration for you, all that you accomplish so magnificently in your running. You have been an incredible example the phenomenal running that can be achieved even with the challenge of diabetes. Your recent swift Crossover 5K results last weekend just one of many examples! And your wisdom about healthy diet and your outstanding decent character, you are tops and stellar!
I just don't have that kind of commitment I guess. Cooking is not the issue as I do most of it in the home. And I usually prefer home cooking to restaurants, but sometimes need a break from my own cooking. I currently take medications for high BP, cholesteral and Type 2 diabetes...Guess I go with the "Better Living Through Cemistry" idea.

I also try to do all in moderation and have changed a lot of my eating habits. Weight loss and exercise have been the most influence on my periodic lab reports. Won't even go into some of my other "bad" habits!

When I attended a nutrition class for diabetes, was surprised at variation of body sizes of the people there, from small to moderate to large. One issue on prepared foods advertising no sugar or low sugar. Beware of those that substitute with "alchohol" sugars. And some seem to add cholesterals to enhance the flavor lost by removing sugar. Like the trick some pulled saying 1/2 the calories when all they did was cut the size in half! High sodium in prepared foods is another thing I watch.
