Supporting running in the metro Richmond area
I post this with a bit of humor but also with a sadistic half-baked plan to crutch the Monument 10K. Crutches are necessary due to a not so graceful fall and resulting injury at Willis River 35K/50K race a few weeks ago.
The doc has told me that I will still be on crutches beyond the race so with that in mind and since I am already registered for the race.
I would start behind the last wave to not get in anyones way.
Again it is with a little humor and a hint of sadistic madness that one of my good friends and I joked about at first.....but we all know every joke has some truth.
Just this morning I was heading into work and a coworker said man you can really move on those crutches....he is not a runner. I thought Hhhhhhhmmmm perhaps I can do this for 6.2....that is if I can handle the cobblestones.

Make sure you wear some of those fake buttocks so that they show when looking at the back of the gown.
Permalink Reply by Chris on February 2, 2012 at 7:01pm I have already recruited a very hairy legged nurse if I decide to use your very creative idea. Great idea.

A guy completed the Richmond half marathon on crutches this past November. LIke you, he was okay when he signed up for the race, then a few weeks before.....he found himself on crutches, and decided, why not.... I'm told other than his arms and hands being sore, he was fine, and when I saw him he looked like he was having fun.
I like the custome idea below. Heck, you just might win some money.
Enjoy

Permalink Reply by Old Guy on February 3, 2012 at 8:31am I remember that guy. I was cheering runners at various points on the course and he and his girlfriend passed me several times. Just make sure you used proper crutch technique to avoid arm injury. May be something you can do to help hands, blisters?
Permalink Reply by Karl Cover on February 2, 2012 at 9:45am Does anybody remember Dack Axselle? He was born with spina bifida and, in 1984 at age 10, he decided to walk the entire Richmond Marathon on crutches. He finished in 11 hours and 10 minutes with 1000 or so people waiting at the finish line. He's still in the area teaching at Hanover High School.
Permalink Reply by Chris on February 2, 2012 at 6:59pm Amazing thanks for sharing this motivational. I was also 10 in 1984 and I would have never thought to take on such a challenge. Wow!

Permalink Reply by Old Guy on February 2, 2012 at 10:25am While cheering the runners/walkers etc. at Monument and Suntrust/Netelos I have noted a number of challenged athletes starting at the back of these events. My hat off to them. You would be in good company.
Permalink Reply by Ed Carmines on February 2, 2012 at 1:17pm I can offer an alternative. Sit on the sidelines and enjoy the race or volunteer. I have suffered through a number of injuries and do not relish the thought of not being able to run. Running is a gift, not everyone can do it. Don't run the risk of injuring yourself further.
