Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

Good Knee Surgeons that support Runners in the Richmond Area

I need help finding the best knee doctor in my insurance plan. I started running the year I was turning 50 and was surprised to find out I loved it. I trained with the YMCA for the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K. Running helped me quit smoking, eat much healthier and tone my entire body. No matter what the weather, I really looked forward to my run.  Breathing issues knocked me out during and after the 10K. And when I thought I had the breathing under control (mold allergy), my knee became very painful. I had orthoscopic surgery where my surgeon shaved down the meniscus. He told me it was worse than he thought and went in on both sides of my knee. I'm not even sure if there's any meniscus left. After three weeks I still had more pain than before surgery and was told I wasn't doing enough, three weeks later I was told I was doing too much (or vice versa) and three weeks after that  was told I had arthritis (it was never even mentioned before) and I had to live with it until it was too painful to control with over the counter meds, then I could come back for knee replacement surgery. My primary physician feels running is too damaging so he hasn't been supportive in this area. I walk most days from 1 to 3 hours at a brisk pace and sometimes come home with a very swollen knee. Going downstairs is now painful so I need to go back to the orthopedic surgeon but I don't feel my current surgeon will be too helpful. Can anyone recommend a doctor/surgeon that will do their best to get me running again if its a possibility? I'd appreciate any help as I feel helpless with my current surgeon.

Bill Nordt has operated on both of my knees, he is with West End Orthopedic. I know he has also run the Richmond Marathon several times.
Thank you. I will look into switching to him. Unfortunately my current surgeon is West End also so I don't know if that will cause issues. Thanks again.
I see Stephen Reece at Adanvanced Orthopedics for my ankle. Ken Zaslov at AOC does shoulders and knees and does an excellent job. There are several physicians in the group. They are very focused on sports medecine, and I believe they even are physicians to several local sports teams. Also, I have had prior knee surgery and run w/o a problem. Consider weight training so the muscles in your legs are strong enough to support the joint.
Dr. Thomas Loghran at VCU Sports Medicine. The only doctor in the area I would consider for knees, he repaired my meniscus two years ago and I have been going strong ever since. I now consider that my good knee!
Kathy,
I just had knee surgery in February at West End Orthopedic and I'm doing well and was pleased with everyone there. My surgeon was Dr. Smith. One thing that I did was request a copy of the "Operative Report" so that I knew exactly what they did during the surgery. If you'd like to discuss further, you can e-mail me at karl.cover@dom.com. Good luck.
Kathy,

I used Dr. Garrnett at West End Orthopaedic in the summer of 2008 to get torn cartlidge repaired and my meniscus cut. He is Virginia born, raised and educated if that is important to you. I'd suggest using him. I have to have this surgery done again so I plan to go back to him!
