Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

The Tri-Cities Road Runners did an excellent job yesterday hosting the inaugural HHT Awareness 10k at Pocahontas State Park.  In addition to running on nice dry trails (no snow or mud!), the event raised money for an area family whose children have HHT (Hereditary Hemorrahagic Telangiectasia), a disease affecting blood vessels.  The course was the same as the 10k/20k/30k Scholarship runs which Chris Calfee designed (and Chris came in 4th at yesterday's race).  Military personnel from Fort Lee volunteered as course marshalls, and other soldiers ran the race.  There were also many RRRC members in attendance, including Tom Bednarz.  Joseph Ryan has pictures posted on the RRRC website.   The race also offered walkers the option of 3 or 6.2 miles.  139 finishers.  Results are here: http://tricitiesroadrunners.org/

This was a wonderful event, and a great day to run in the woods! I really enjoyed hanging out with my Skirt Run buddies.

Is there somewhere I can find a map of the course? I'd like to run there again but fear getting hopelessly lost ;)
I ran with my GPS watch......I can pull it off for you......
Karyn: I run with a group just about every weekend at Pocahontas Park. Check the Trail Runners site for information. We are planning a run this Saturday morning, 9am from the front of the park. You are welcome to join us and we can run that course.
I'll second Martha's comments on the race. TCRR did a great job for an inaugural event! The only problem was, the course was too easy- there should have been a few more hills....
Yes, this was a well managed race and I love that course. Hopefully next year more people will come out. I just want to thank Larry Tolar for putting on a race over these beautiful yet challenging trails. And if Negsplits wants to see a more challenging course in the park, I think that I could find one to fit his needs.
Joe- I signed up for the Charlottesville 10 miler on Sunday. That course will provide enough hills to last me for a while. If you run the course from Saturday's race very often you should be more than ready for C'ville!
Yes, that course will provide you with ample supply of hills. Especially the first 3 miles are the most challenging in the campus area. Then you hit that mile stretch of downhill. Yes, I'm running it too. I am attracted to the tougher race courses. I ran Ukrops 10K one year and the course layout is BORING. Have you done the Virginia 10 Miler??? That's a very good one on terms of difficulty. If you like hills, you'll love this 10 Miler. Farm basket Hill is not for the weak of heart.
Joe;

How many stream crossings? What about a shoe sucking mud monster?

Run Happy - thru streams and faster than a shoe stealing mud monster......
Run Happy: Virginia 10 Miler has no stream crossings nor any shoe sucking monsters BUT has several side stitching rolling hills and a hill at the end that has a name. It will suck the strength right out of your stride and make you cry like a baby. Its 4 Miler is even worse cause you have to run those hills at 4 mile pace which makes it even worse. The good thing is there are about 30,000 less runners, no waves, great organization and a challenging course that gives me a sense of accomplishment when I have finished. The same can be said for the Charlottesville 10 Miler.

Whenever you are looking for a different place to run, let me know. You are welcome to join our little group for a run at Pocahontas Park. We are planning our next run for this weekend, probably Saturday morning at 9am. We would be honored with your presence.
When do you run in Pocohontas? Is it regular - I live only a few miles away and it is a favorite spot for me to run.......
Michael;

Check out the trail running group. Go to the home page and scroll down and in the middle under "Groups" you will see the icon. They seem to run there most weekends, lead by Joe. Additionally, they seem to have other trail runs around town, Buttermilk/North trail, Ashland, etc.

Enjoy;

Run Happy
