Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

I just ran my first 5K yesterday. Truth be known, I jogged the whole way. I must admit that the main reason I joined Richmond Runners was to get proof of the results. (Most people who know me would only believe I had done such a thing if they could see it printed in black and white.) Although I'm just starting out and did not do the best, I really think that this is something that I'd like to pursue in terms of setting goals, training for them, etc. And maybe one day, I could run in a marathon. In any event, I'm looking for the answers to two questions: (1) Do any beginners just "participate" by treadmill/email, or only every other weekend? I like the group support system built into a running club, but my ability to set off on a run is somewhat limited. (2) Is my next step to sign up for another 5K and improve my time while training for that, or do I sign up and train for an 8K? Thanks!

Kiki, Nicole,
How about giving the Skirt Run tomorrow, 6:30 at Legends a try? I am thinking I might be able to get by for the first time tomorrow. It even says you can walk if you want. Check it out under events. I have done the one from just down the road at Savor, but not this one.
Hey Pete, will you be wearing a skirt, no wait, a kilt? Show us some runner leg...
Uhhh...Excuse me, Pete, What's the "skirt run" at Legends all about? Is it once a month?
I'm soo out of the loop!
As far as I know it is still monthly, though I had a problem yesterday evening and I still won't be able to make it.
Sooo Proud of you, Kiki! Keep up the great work! I started out waaaay out of shape and could barely walk a few blocks, much less run...
I got "hooked" on 5K's right away! The awsome part about just starting out is that you beat your times by minutes, not just shaving a couple seconds.
It doesn't matter what your next goal is as long as you have one!

Keep on Runnin'
It's nice to hear real life success stories like that! But maybe a skirt jog is not for me this month, because of my schedule. (A collective sigh of relief from those who might be forced to witness such a thing!) Great idea, though. Next time perhaps. But, between this and the No Frills Race, I've got to wonder just how the running short industry keeps in business! :) But it really sounds like you folks know how to have a fun time. You’re all just very nice and seem good natured. So, I guess I’ll have to be a good sport about the workout dress code. I really appreciate the perspective and support you’ve had to offer. I think it would be hard to get discouraged around here. Now, I’ve got a question... Someone suggested drinking whey protein half an hour before a race really helps endurance. I’m game for giving it a whirl because I like smoothies and all, but has anybody had experience with dietary tricks to help beginners train?
The best "dietary" trick I've found when starting out is to find other like minded folks to run with. (I joined the Marathon Training team) Those first few miles can be tough, but you will not even notice them as you talk the miles away. Remember, at this point you should be able to run and talk at the same time. If you can not talk, then you are going to fast.

Pre/post dietary trick – you really have to find out what works best for you as everyone is different. When you are ready, experiment during your normal weekday or weekend run. Never experiment at a race. Same thing with clothes, never wear new cloth at a race, try it out first during a normal run first, that way if things go wrong it is not such a big deal.

What I do:

Pre-run/race – normal days – oatmeal (strawberries & cream), long-runs (over 15) – oatmeal & Nature Oat bar, long races (marathon & beyond) – double oatmeal & coffee, or bagel w/peanut butter & coffee

Post-long run - best to take in food that has a 4:1 Carbs-> protein ratio. This helps the body replenish spent glucose and helps with muscle repair. My favorite post-run recovery food/drink is chocolate milk and even ice cream if possible.

Keep asking questions, we runners love to talk/type.

Run Happy
I like Cliff Bars, a bagel, or oatmeal before I run. Sometimes I will get a power bagel from Einstien Brothers. Some kinda good. High in carbs and low in fat and protien. I find it works best if I eat at least two hours before running. That way my stomach is not over full, the digestion is pretty much over, and the "sleepies" that come about 30 minutes after eating are over.
