Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

Hi everyone,

I was doing my long run in Pocahontas yesterday afternoon and when I came to the Swift Creek Dam, the water was way out of its banks and not safe to cross. I'm wondering if anyone knows of another way around other than running back to the main gate, back to the swimming pool and to the Courthouse Road entrance I parked at. My 15 mile run became an unexpected 19 or 20 miler :/

If it helps, I was approaching Swift Creek from the southern side of the park.

Jay: first thing is you really took a big risk by running from that Courthouse Rd. trail head. Hunting season is in full swing right now and hunters are in the woods. I STRONGLY suggest that you find another place to start your run, preferably from the Beach Rd. side of the park. On Sunday you are safe anywhere since hunting is banned on that day. Second, unfortunately that creek crossing is the only route that I know of that you can take to complete your loop. I've done a variation of that loop in the summer and early fall. The creek water level is down at that time but this time of the year it is known to rise and turn into a raging river. Unless we meet an unusual drought you can expect water levels similar to what you saw yesterday until late spring. If anyone knows another trail to take, let me know too.
