Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

Odd that I have not seen any posts on the weekend's Suntrust 26.2, 13.1, 5K except for comments on Boston closing? Has Suntrust become an out of towner's and non-member event? Even non-members can post to this board. I saw a few members run by but I am not familiar with most younger (under 55) members. Saw more members volunteering. Old Newspaper marathon used to be a more local event.

Just found it courious. I know there were a bunch of MTT'er's as I saw those green and blue shirts all over. It was such a perfect running day as I saw it and though more would post their experiences, etc. I did not run but had a great time cheering others on. (Actually did about 12 miles workout following the three events.

ANYHOO, hope all enjoyed and would suspect there were numerous PR's.

The thing is that some of us have done the Richmond marathon so many times, that has become an uneventful thing. I, in particular never really had a great Richmond marathon, except for the first, which happened to be my first marathon ever.
I guess the question is whether this is a good or bad thing? Maybe RRRC needs to look in next couple years at putting on a marathon, different course, etc. Maybe an early spring event as Boston qualifier since looks like Suntrust may be too late unless you want to wait 16 months to next Boston.
I ran the 8K race for the first time. Great crowd support and great course to run. The downhill finish was something else. People were right when they said you could make up some time there:). Already looking forward to running the race next year.

The one drawback I had was chasing down the UPS trucks to get your bag if you checked it. The trucks were at the bottom of Shockoe Slip until an hour after the 8K race started and then they moved up to the finish area. Kinda tough on the legs climbing back up Shockhoe Slip after running that last race portion:)
I ran the 1/2 marathon for the first time and PR'd, but I still did not do as well as I would have liked. I have been fighting a sinus infection, and I had an adverse reaction to my medication while running. I know you shouldn't try anything new before a race, but I felt I didn't have a choice. I wanted to be able to breath as I ran. I pushed through my discomfort and finished.

The highlight for me was at the end. As I was sprinting the last 200 of the race, the crowd went wild and I heard people cheering for me. For a moment I felt as if I was the only person out there (in the lead of course). I wish it would have been colder and the humidity had not been so high.

Since I work in the same buiding as the Omni, I utilized the shuttle to get to the expo. While on the shuttle I met a group from Canada. I think it is pretty cool how people came from all over to run this race. I also enjoyed meeting Bart Yasso. I enjoyed training with the Sportsbackers HMTT and look forward to doing the training and race again.
Congratulations, Sabrina, on your first half marathon! I think the Richmond races are so much fun to run because of the enthusiastic, supportive crowds.

Was Peter Grimwood one of the Canadians you met? He is a friend of ours who ran the full Richmond marathon this year on his way home from having done an Iron Man in Panama City, Florida.

Tom decided at the last minute to run the half marathon and placed 5th in his age group. Margaret Broaddus and Tim Cook also placed 5th in their respective age groups. I noticed that Mary Kate Berglund was First Place in her age group and that Ed Carmines had a very good time in the marathon race! Ron Henry, I believe, won his age group in the 8K by a sizeable margin.

Congratulations to these and all the many other RRRC runners, but especially to you, Sabrina, for your enjoying the thrill of accomplishing this distance for the first time.
Thanks Mitzi...for clarification this was my 2nd 1/2 marathon, but my first time running the Suntrust. No, I do not think his name was Peter.
Hey Sabrina!

Glad you're back running well again. My wife and I did the 8K..we survived.
We're doing the Toys for Tots 5K at Innsbrook Dec.13th.

I ran the Half and crushed my PR with a 1:33:22. I was very happy, as my goal was a sub-1:35.

Fantastic weather for a long distance run.

That's my second time doing this event and I enjoyed it just as much as last year.
I, too was surprised by there not being any messages.
Over the years the newspaper included stories or at least mentioned the "Old Lions" (I think Five runners) who have run all of the Richmond Marathons.
I don't remember who all 5 are but I did see that John Loughran and John Deeter were there and finished their 32nd consecutive Richmond Marathon.
Someone name the other "Old Lions" and recognize them if they ran again this year.
I ran the half marathon for the second year (my second half) and PR'd. I was a lot slower than I though I would have gone by my pace in the 10 miler a few weeks ago, but I had a good time. I really enjoyed the music on the course...I thought it was better than last year. I was a member of the 1/2MTT and having the coaches run with me towards the end was GREAT motivation! I really enjoyed this group and felt that everyone was so supportive.
My sister and her husband also came down from Philly and ran the 8k. They are not runners but had a blast! I was also excited to see them and my fiance surprise me around mile 9!
Baltimore Gibrall ran it in 3:53 and Bill Smith was there also.
John Deeter was hampered by a bad knee that he had surgery on earlier this year. While he can still bike he can not run, thus he walked the course (with Ken Hubbard) and finished in 6:18, thus keeping his streak alive.

Hopefully the knee will be fixed and he will be running it again next year.
