Richmond Road Runners

Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

So, who's ready to elect a new President.  Obviously, Mother Nature is not crazy about the idea of me being President of the Club.  The first race after the election was run in a downpour (Toy Run), Banquet had to be re-scheduled due to snow and the February Meeting had to be cancelled due to Thunder Snow.

Now the Sweetheart 8K will not happen.  As anyone that has seen me running before daybreak or riding my bike early will know I take safety seriously.  Due to accumulated snow and ice, the course for the Sweetheart 8K is currently not runnable.  With the number of runners registered and the lack of any substantial meltdown between now and Saturday morning, there is no way of running a race that would be safe for those running.

The Club takes this decision very seriously.  We looked at some alternatives but did not have any viable options.  The race schedule becomes too full after this weekend for us to reschedule.

There will be no packet pick-up or t-shirts distributed.  We will refund your entry fee through a credit to your credit card or a check if you paid by check.  This will take us a week or so to process, I apologize about the amount of time to refund, but please keep in mind that we are a all-volunteer organization and do not employ a back-office staff to deal with such transactions.

Thanks to everyone that registered for the race, the volunteers planning to work the race and our great race director for this event.

If you have questions, comments, concerns or a light-hearted thought (I could use one), please feel free to e-mail me.  President@rrrc.org.

Thanks,

Sean Cusack

I had a feeling this was coming and it is definitely the right decision. Thanks for keeping the safety of all a priority!!
Sean,

Given the conditions on the course, there was little choice. However, why not have the Yak Trax 5K at Pocahontas State Park? We could utilize part of the old Sweetheart course....

Gary
Gary,

That would be a great idea... are you volunteering to direct it, design and submit the course, get the park permit, etc.? Seriously, I like the idea but you know it takes more than ideas to make an event happen. I hate that the Grove event has to be canceled but it is best for the safety of all participants. Btw, I used yaktrax in my own neighborhood this morning and seriously needed them for a total of about 1-mile on a 2-mile route. Happy/safe running to all!!

Bill
Bill,

The comment was thrown out in humor and I am well aware of what would be required to put on a race of this sort. No way to get it done on short notice but a bunch of VHTRC'ers will be there on the trails in the morning (including some sporting Yak Trax). Mine got a good workout on the Buttermilk/Northbank trails last Saturday.

Gary
Gary,
There is Youngblood 5k next Saturday at Robious Landing next weekend that may need the Yak Trax so you don't need a 5k in Pocahontas.
Sean, the theme here is this; as long as you are president its going to continue to snow, rain, sleet...... Obviously in epic proportions! I for one am growing tired of all this snow, so in the interest of saving the running community here in richmond.......

Just kidding, You are doing a great job. I for one ran the toys for tots run, in the rain, and had a blast! Who wants to keep doing races in perfect weather anyway? Keep up the great work and keeping us all safe. Spring is right around the corner.
Before the area running community became so "organized", many met weekly at Stratford Hills S.C. for training, particularly during marathon season.

Maybe someone will set something up like the Facebook Snowball battle in D.C!

There was even a D.C. Snowball #2 this week!
Speaking of D.C., Cupid's Undie Run is tomorrow. I am not going, but here is a link for anyone that is interested.....

We know you are going-you just don't want anyone from Richmond there getting PICTURES!
Hey Gary, here is a race for you to organize and direct right here in Richmond. The Capital City Undie Run. Pocahontas Park would be the perfect setting too. And you can count on my help. I'll volunteer to be the official race photographer!!!
Im just glad I happened to check the web site for directions to the course. My only comment is that an email be sent to each registered participant be sent when an event is cancelled or postponed.
An email was sent to the people whom we had email addresses for. The mail-in application did not have an email address field.
