Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

I love the snow, but it is really putting a damper on my training for the Shamrock 1/2.  I run early in the morning during the week, but it is so icy in the mornings now, I am just not willing to risk it.  The treadmill is not an option.  I DESPISE the treadmill!!!  I do not own one nor do I have a gym membership.  So I find myself doing cardio videos from Verizon Fios OnDemand.

If you find yourself in the same boat, what are you doing to cope?

i am running on the treadmill - which is boring but better than nothing
When forced to the treadmill, I make it a workout. I do a warmup and the push the speed up, or raise the incline, anything to raise my heartrate. I may do like a track workout, 400 meters, rest, repeat, etc. Or set for 1-2 minutes sprints with 30 second rests. Or just do a steady 3 miles at a good pace. Also play mind games with myself, like pushing pace at end as if trying to outrun an oncoming runner a end of a race, even practising my glimp over my shoulder to see how close "he" is, as I talk myself through the end of the "race".

Seem to take some of boredom out of it, though I don't find it that boring.
I just call it a mid training schedule mini taper.....But enough with this "taper", I'm going road running tomorrow morning from the Downtown Y. One advantage of a gym membership....I have a place to shower and change after my runs. And for those bloody knees and hands, they have a first aid kit. (heres hoping I remain verticle)

Run Happy but NOT on a DREADMILL!!!!
I have a pair of Yak Trax that I used last night. Definitely help w/ gripping on ice & packed snow.
Engine,
Where did you purchase them?
Running Goddess:

Go to the Trail running group board - there is a long discussion there on Yak Trax and similar products.
I got them from Campmor.com, but I'm sure Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, REI & maybe even Dick's have them. They're not great in snow, unless it's packed. For ice, they're excellent.
If getting Yak Trax, be sure to get the Pro version ($30) rather than the Walkers ($20). Given the recent weather, you may need to order them online.
take an old pair of sneaks and make your own yak trax with screws...

Thanks so much Batmomm! This is a great idea! I can't wait to get my drill out.
Drilling screws through sneakers!!!!! I can't believe it. I thought these Yak Trax cost $30.......not $300. Hey Running Goddess, since I feel kinda sorry for you since your team got whopped so bad, I'll lend you a couple of bucks to help cover the Yak-a-de-yaks. I can't believe that I have found some folks that are more penny pinchers than I am!!!!
One issue with YakTraxs and other types of ice/snow traction products, they are NOT good when running on pavement. If you have almost 100% snow/ice cover or you are running trails, go for it, but if you route has significant section of clear pavement they will be like running with a 2X4 on you foot. I would be worried about tearing up my legs (ie injury) running on pavement.

Now the screw idea might work better as they have a smaller "footprint" and thus will not be like running on a 2X4. I'v seen other people use the screws with great success. I believe you only need a few to get traction.

I ran downtown Richmond area this morning. Plenty of ice and snow, but way to much clear pavement for YakTraxs. But for using screws...yes might just do the trick.
