Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

I love the snow, but it is really putting a damper on my training for the Shamrock 1/2.  I run early in the morning during the week, but it is so icy in the mornings now, I am just not willing to risk it.  The treadmill is not an option.  I DESPISE the treadmill!!!  I do not own one nor do I have a gym membership.  So I find myself doing cardio videos from Verizon Fios OnDemand.

If you find yourself in the same boat, what are you doing to cope?

I was out trekking along Northbank today & it would have been PERFECT for a run! I did see a runner who was loving it, as well as a biker. Even saw people taking a dip in the James River - no joke!! Apparently, snow doesn't have to stop recreational activities.
Planning on attempting a run tomorrow...without Yaktrax. We'll see how slowly it goes!
Joe,

We started at 9:00 and the trails were in decent shape. It was icy under the south side of Boulevard Bridge and the creeks were running high. Reedy Creek was too high for me to think about wading, so I went around on the road.

No falls, though I did try to slide down the hill below Hollywood Cemetery. Used the YakTrax and they did fine. Strong winds crossing the river each time and I could barely see Belle Isle from the north side of the river. The road across the island was a couple of inches deep in water, but my feet never froze.

How do you get to Northbank?
We got there by running across Belle Isle and picking up the trail by the parking lot next to Tredegar. You can also access it at the bottom of Pump House Road by the Nickle Bridge, on Hampton Street next to Maymont or at the Parking lot on Texas Avenue.
I got in two 7 mile runs on Riverside Drive down by pony pasture. I used my YakTraxs for both runs. Saturday morning the roads were wet and slushy. The YakTraxs worked well, but at times I was looking for deeper footing. YakTraxs kind are a "hard" run on pavement.

Sunday morning...oh my goodness, the river was beautiful. Running along the river at Sunrise....Snow covered tree line lane, listening to the roar of the river (Z dam & rocks), the morning song birds, and the occassional honk of a goose while the sun rose over the sunkissed steal grey/blue river. Just awesome....

Sunday Riverside Drive was completly frozen. Temps around 16 froze all that slush to ice. The YakTraxs gave me great traction everywhere except where water had run across the road and froze smooth. The frozen slush had enough texture for the YakTraxs to dig in and grab. Also made for a lovely crunch crunch sound while running. My pace was pretty darn close to normal. Only down side, my right knee was just a little bit sore after the run. I think between the YakTraxs and the ice, the surface was even less forgiving than concret.

Run Happy but be sure to enjoy the morning show.
That Sunday run sounded great. Wish I could have been there. Just not sure if I'd rather been running or taking pictures!!!
I have the rubber snow running cleats that essentially stretch over my running shoes. The brand name is "STABILICERS". They have small hex head screws (about 15 per shoe) to keep you from slipping. They work great on ice and hard packed snow. If there are clear spots without ice/snow they don't slip but it will wear down the studs after awhile. When you order them they come with extra studs and you can also move the installed studs around putting the worn ones where you may not need as much traction. The great thing is ... THEY DO NOT COME OFF WHILE RUNNING, but do add weight and may affect your gait. I did 13 in mine a few Sunday's ago without issue. I bought mine on-line years ago while living out west. I'm told you can also thread one-eigth inch hex head wood/sheet metal screws directly into the bottom of an old pair of running shoes. The screws will stay, you won't feel them poking into you feet since the midsole is thicker and you wear them only on ice/snow.
My training schedule has been largely UN-affected by all the snow and ice. It's my racing schedule that I'm starting to get worried about( mind you, this is coming from someone who has averaged 46 races per year the last 3 years)! I was registered for the 2nd race in the Tidewater Striders Distance Series race which was postponed once, then cancelled, and I am signed up for the Sweetheart 4 miler in F'burg which has been postponed to this Sunday. The 4 miler is at a park off of Rte. 17 NW of town, and with all the snow they're getting, it may well be cancelled also. I may have to set up and measure my own course in Tappahannock and get someone to time me if this keeps up!
