Supporting running in the metro Richmond area
Those living in this area are fortunate in having access to multiple trails along the James River between The Bouleard Bridge, the Lee Bridge and Forest Hill Ave. Unfortunately, many runners do not know the "how to's" of running trails, or exactly where the trails are.
The trails (Buttermilk Trail, Forest Hill Park Trails, NorthBank Trails) are very accessible, well defined, regularly used by runners/cyclists/walkers, and safe. These trails are a GREAT resource and such a refreshing break from the same-old same-old road running. Trail running will develop your agility, give you a fartlek-quality workout, and is GOOD THERAPY!
We (local trail runners) would like to reach out to those of you that would like to try out trail running, and/or would like a guided run on the James River Park System's trails for the sake of familiarization. And no, you will not need to buy trail shoes! Just carry water if you'd like.
The Plan: We will lead a Trail Running For Beginners group at 8am on the first Saturday of each month if there is an interest. The runs will start and finish at the Pump House Road gravel parking lot behind The Boulevard Bridge toll plaza (adjacent to Byrd Park). The run will be for approx. 7 miles and will cater to your needs. The initial run is slated for January 7! Rain or Shine!
If you are interested in taking part in the 01/07/12 run at 8am, you MUST post a response to this email. Otherwise no one will be there to run with you! Please call if you need to.
The New Year is upon us. Try something new and exciting! I hope to see your post...

Did anyone have the exact miles? I had 6.74 but my Garmin may have checked out at times.

Permalink Reply by Jonathan Wade Thomas on January 7, 2012 at 10:43pm Hey Mark,
Is there any possibility of doing ant runs on a Sunday in the future? I work on Saturdays but i would really love to try out trail running. I think it would be good to switch it up from pounding the pavement.
Permalink Reply by Mark Iscool on January 8, 2012 at 8:50am Saturday trail runs works best in many regards at this time. Please keep checking the postings, as you never know if it may someday be switched-up.

Permalink Reply by Jonathan Wade Thomas on January 8, 2012 at 1:23pm Thanks Mark...i definitely will do that.
Permalink Reply by dog on January 8, 2012 at 10:36am Those same trails and many others are open on Sundays and the other 3 Saturdays. Grab a couple friends and try it on you own. I like the quiet and stress relief of doing trail runs on my own but make sure of the safety of the site you chose. And the next 3 weeks practise will help prepare you for a group run dynamic.

Permalink Reply by dog on January 8, 2012 at 4:38pm Ran trails yesterday and today - what great weatheer - Yesterday I chased up 4-5 deer, today about 8 wild turkeys. Guess the hunters missed a few this year. Really therapeutic out there. Hope you enjoy...one tip - concentrate on footing when running a new trail.
