Supporting running in the metro Richmond area
Those living in this area are fortunate in having access to multiple trails along the James River between The Bouleard Bridge, the Lee Bridge and Forest Hill Ave. Unfortunately, many runners do not know the "how to's" of running trails, or exactly where the trails are.
The trails (Buttermilk Trail, Forest Hill Park Trails, NorthBank Trails) are very accessible, well defined, regularly used by runners/cyclists/walkers, and safe. These trails are a GREAT resource and such a refreshing break from the same-old same-old road running. Trail running will develop your agility, give you a fartlek-quality workout, and is GOOD THERAPY!
We (local trail runners) would like to reach out to those of you that would like to try out trail running, and/or would like a guided run on the James River Park System's trails for the sake of familiarization. And no, you will not need to buy trail shoes! Just carry water if you'd like.
The Plan: We will lead a Trail Running For Beginners group at 8am on the first Saturday of each month if there is an interest. The runs will start and finish at the Pump House Road gravel parking lot behind The Boulevard Bridge toll plaza (adjacent to Byrd Park). The run will be for approx. 7 miles and will cater to your needs. The initial run is slated for January 7! Rain or Shine!
If you are interested in taking part in the 01/07/12 run at 8am, you MUST post a response to this email. Otherwise no one will be there to run with you! Please call if you need to.
The New Year is upon us. Try something new and exciting! I hope to see your post...
Ellie: I would create an eigth day in the week if that was the only way to have an opportunity to run with you! OK, here's the deal- Saturday trail clinics is where we will start. However, I have veto power and am known to change the rules as I see fit. Thus, let's revisit the topic of a Sunday clinic in a month or two. Good plan?
I would love to try out the Trail Running. May I bring a friend? How many miles are you planning to run?
Reread initial post. Answers are there.
Woo Hoo!!! Yes indeed!!! Bring a friend, bring a neighbor, bring snacks, bring your laundry! OK, seriously now: We'll run 7-8 miles. Will do Buttermilk/NorthBank or Buttermilk/Forest Hill Park. You will likely want to bring hand-carry water or a camelbak to have some hydration, but it's not July so quantity is not a looming issue. Please let me know for certain that you will be coming out. Otherwise I'll likely plan something else. This will be fun!
My reply to you somehow ended up below... :)
I will be there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whats the exact location?
Drive to the Boulevard Bridge. About 200' before the toll, you'll see Pump House Rd on the right. Turn onto Pump House Rd. You'll then see the gravel parking area ahead on the left (behind the toll plaza building). I drive a black Subaru Forester. I should be there by 7:45 at latest. My cell 651-5415 if you need it...
Mark's directions are from north of the river. Coming from southside, take the 1st left after the toll booth. Once on Pump House Rd., follow Mark's directions.
Mark - I am thrilled you're planning on doing this. 95% sure I will be there Saturday - will let you know for sure Wed afternoon. Might be bringing my husband along if we can line up a baby-sitter. Thanks!!
PS - Not sure what my trail pace is...but I can hang with the group whatever the speed, as long as you all aren't pulling 7 minute miles :-)
keep my phone number handy in case you need it. see you there!!!
Babysitter's all lined up, so we are both in for Saturday. See you there!
I can't do this Saturday, but I would love to join ya'll next month. Sounds fun!! :)
