Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

Why are races no longer held in Pocahantas State Park? With such an extensive trail layout coupled with ample parking and little need for police marshaling services, I am puzzled that after the club dropped the 10/20/30k Scholarship Race that another race in the park wasn't installed. We have so many races scheduled at Innsbrook but none at one of the best running venues in Richmond. There are those of us who enjoy running trails and would like to see a trail race offered by the club in the metro Richmond area.

I think it would only take you volunteering as a race director to make it happen!
Outstanding!!! I know if Joe directed a race there, I'd sign up in a heartbeat. What's it gonna be Joe? 5k...10k...or perhaps another 10miler??? You could have black and gold tech shirts for all runners!!!
Count me in. Joe knows the park trails real well, and that knowledge would be put to great use as a race director. My vote is for the longer version - 10k or 10 miles.
The problem is that many in Richmond are afraid of trails. The other problem is in the Fall everyone seems to be training for a Full or Half marathon and many training programs tell runners to stay off the trails for fear of twisting an ankle. If you want this race to happen my recommendation is to have it after the Fall Marathon season and maybe have it in the Spring.

Please note I love running trails, and find that running trails make me a much much stronger road runner. Joe I think you idea is great. Just be aware of the various Spring goal marathons and area ultras... ie Shamrock, Boston, Holiday Lake 50K, Promise Land 50K.

You do make some valid points except the one about people being afraid of trails. I hope that isn't true. Pocahantas trails are one of the safest places to run. Look what you are missing by running these trails: crazy car drivers, smog, bikers (between sunrise and 10am), dogs. In the summer you are running in mostly shade and in the winter the trees block out much of the wind. You can't say that about many of the roads we run on around here.
What about the kinds of critters that Hearn keeps running into in the Wilds of Shenadoah?? Any of those lurking in Pochantas?? :)
Yep.......deer, turkey, squirrels, a fox or two and turkey buzzards. I have yet to see a mountain lion.
I'm okay as long as no mountain lion or bear:). Think I'll try to stay in the middle of the pack on the trails for safety, though:)
I doubt that there's any Timber Rattlers in Pocohantas... :-)
Okay, I was fine until I saw "Rattlers":). Maybe I'll just help out at a waterstop so I can stand on a chair away from the slithering things on the ground:).
a 15k or 30k could be a good way for runners preparing for one of the "Horton Ultras" in the spring to test their legs and equipment.
As for distances, RRRC used to have a 8 miler there also. Don't know how park roads/trails have changed since then.
