Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

Why are races no longer held in Pocahantas State Park? With such an extensive trail layout coupled with ample parking and little need for police marshaling services, I am puzzled that after the club dropped the 10/20/30k Scholarship Race that another race in the park wasn't installed. We have so many races scheduled at Innsbrook but none at one of the best running venues in Richmond. There are those of us who enjoy running trails and would like to see a trail race offered by the club in the metro Richmond area.

The best RRRC race was the Scholarship 10K/20K/30K in Pocahontas State Park. I look forward to other trail races in our area, and would be willing to drive a bit to enter them. Pocahontas is my favorite "local" state park, but even the wonderful Bear Creek State Park is less than 1 hour from Richmond and has 14 miles of multi-use trails.
Ed's spot map is not 100% accurate. (He didn't claim it to be nor am I complaining. I'm just stating a fact.) I know of a few college kids with parents in the Richmond area who are members. Some really far Southsiders are members too. The race discounts, good running atmosphere, low membership rates, and the nice newsletter probably would entice avid runners from other areas to join. In 2007 I belonged to the Tidewater Striders, DC Road Runners and RRRC. I raced a fair amount out of the area that year and since I was 18 or 19 at the time I got a student rate so it saved me money on race entry fees to join the club.

As I've said before, RRRC does an excellent job of marketing. In fact, RRRC markets things better than some professional organizations I've dealt while in training for my BS in Sports Management. So it's almost safe to say if there is interest in a race in Pocahantas, there will be a well run race out there soon! (No pun intended for the well run race line.)
I didn't think it was 100% accurate but it probably is close to representing where most of the members reside. Ii still doesn't change my opinion that his belief that west enders don't want to cross the river is very weak. He's gotta show me more than a map with a bunch of dots on it to support his hypothesis. Its simply his opinion and not a fair representation of those who live in that area.
Joe I promise that tomorrow I will trek all the way over the river to the museum run. It's a stretch but I think I can do it. Besides I have trainings all day tomorrow so I'll have some extra energy to spare for a good couple miles!
Guess we'll have to do a trail run since you're gonna trek over to the museum. Getting close to our last light trail run anyway before the change to standard time. Of course there is always the museum run with headlights on the trail that we do. Are the Thursday night museum Kamakazees the only group that does trails as a regular part of our run?

So Joe, when are you directing the Poco race and what distance? Folks are waiting....need some help with an application?
My suggestion is to have Joe's Pocahontas race include a singles run. That way we can kill 2 birds with 1 stone. I am in for the Thursday trail run, should be good and muddy by then. By the way, there is a chance of snow in the mountains this weekend (for those doing the SMUT run).
Gary, you wouldn't want a singles run......your heart couldn't take it. No way I'm gonna be held responsible for your demise.
Scotty, You can direct those folks to Christopher Calfee. I ran a portion of the new Lakeview Trail this afternoon. It is a rather challenging trail, single track with roots, rocks and hills. Its about as close to Bear Creek Lake as you can get at Pocahantas Park. There are 3 loops to the trail system. This is a 13.1 mile course and would make for a really challenging long run. And oh by the way........handrails are not provided on this course.

Oh Scotty, when are you getting the stitches taken out of your head???
Joe,

After 90 replies I thought I would set the record straight. The correct spelling is Pocahontas, that may be why you could not find any races there......

Gary
Gotta make sure that folks find the singles race:)
Wow Gary......that's been the problem the whole time. I misspelled a letter and that's why we can't find a race at POCAHONTAS PARK. You have finally pitched in with a most helpful and I might add insightful post. I don't know what I'd do without your thoughtful advice.

Lisa, you need to talk to Christopher about that singles race. But if you're coordinating it, you better check ID's so Gary Hearn doesn't try to sneak in to the race. LOL
We probably would need to check alot of folks IDs and not just Hearn's for the singles race:) Christopher has his work cut out for him on that one:)
