Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

Why are races no longer held in Pocahantas State Park? With such an extensive trail layout coupled with ample parking and little need for police marshaling services, I am puzzled that after the club dropped the 10/20/30k Scholarship Race that another race in the park wasn't installed. We have so many races scheduled at Innsbrook but none at one of the best running venues in Richmond. There are those of us who enjoy running trails and would like to see a trail race offered by the club in the metro Richmond area.

Christopher,
You are the nicest and the BEST!! That would be fantastic and very appreciated!! Thanks for all you do!
I love all the different distance options and February is wonderful, invigorating, beautiful time in the woods.
And I am still in awe and admiration of when you set that record of 300-plus miles through the trails of Pocahontas! You are phenomenal and amazing!!
That sounds like a lot of fun. Please keep us updated!
Thank you Christopher and I am looking forward to your race......I don't care if it is a fat butt or a skinny butt event. Count me in.
I think a better characterization is that the race director decided not to direct the 10/20/30K race and the club could not find another race director that had the passion that Christopher had. I stepped forward with the 10M race as an alternative.
And you did an excellent job with the Capital 10M race. It also filled a void that there was no 10M race offered in Richmond until now. Post race comments are clearly in the positive column for that race and we all want to see it held next year. I just feel that there are a segment of runners in the Richmond area that would love to see a nice trail race in Pocahantas Park. Remember, this venue is one of the reasons that Richmond was voted in the top ten for trail running cities in the United States. And fortunately, that race director is willing to hold another trail race event in February. Whether its fat butt or skinny butt, I'll run it. And I hope that some of our west end friends will dare to venture across the rivar to run it as well. Hey, if they are afraid of getting lost.....just google Map quest.
Thanks for the initiative Joe. I can't speak on behalf of any west enders...but I do live in the 'southside' and I personally think that if there was a race worth the travel and it was exciting enough...I would hope runners would make the trip whether its 15 min or 45 min away. If there is anything I can do to help out with any future races in Pocahontas I would love to help.
1. the critters that are in the park include the following: deer(way too many), turkey, hawks, beavers, the occassional bear, snakes(venom and no venom), bald eagles, misc. other birds, lots of bugs, foxes, stray dogs, and bobcats.
2. The event I am planning is either going to be on the 3rd or 4th weekend in February. It will most likely be on a Sunday. We will be using the same trails as the Scholarship race as well as the new Lakeview trails. You will be able to pick your distance, change your distance, etc. It will be a very minimal, no frills sort of race.
3. It will be both fun and challenging.
4. I did step down as race director of the Scholarship races for many reasons. Nuff Said
5. More details will follow.

In regards to item #1, could we get Hearn to be the lead scout and have him shoo away the wildlife off the trail path(s) for us?? :) Kinda like clearing out those spider webs on the trails:)
Hey, we wouldn't want him to run into that occasional bear now would we ????
Are there still plans for a fat ass race in Pocahontas?
You need to direct that question to Christopher Calfee. I am sure you will have no problem finding his email.
Sounds like mi kinda run. Not into those high dollar, high participant, lets get the out-of-towners and parttime runners/walkers, 2,000-30,000 events. Mostly do the club small events. And trails are easier on the old body.
