Supporting running in the metro Richmond area

If you've run the MMTR before, what is your recommendation on needing trail shoes for the race?  Looks like the race covers a lot of gravel/dirt roads.  How gnarly are the logging roads and the single track trails?  I have trail shoes but prefer running in my distance road shoes unless terrain is pretty rough (uneven/rocky).  Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Carlton - You could use your road shoes for this race.  There are a few gnarly section, both with some of the logging roads and the single track, but if you prefer road shoes, then you most likely will be okay.  I would bring both just in case conditions change or after talking to others you change your mind.  You can also put the other pair of shoes in your drop bag and change at the half way point.

I will run in my trail shoes, I just like the extra traction they give me for those few times they are needed.  My trail shoes also pretty much run like a road shoe, which is why I like them.

Run Happy

What brand of trail shoes do you use?  I have been using Inov-8 and like them okay because they're really light but am always willing check out another brand.

I agree with RunHappy.  If you want to start in road shoes, though, I would put trail shoes in a drop bag for halfway (Long Mtn Wayside), as the 2nd half of the course is rockier with more singletrack.

Like RunHappy, I always run this race in my trail shoes...I like the extra traction and my feet like the extra protection from rocks.  I wear Asics 2160s...they make a road version & a trail version.

I run in the Montrail Mountain Masochist.  I need a flexible shoe with a wide toe box.  Many of the trail shoes have so much stability built in and many have steal plates for forefoot rock protection that I can not run in them.  This is the first Montrail shoe I have been able to run in, and thus far I love them.  They are flexible and run like a road shoe, and in fact you can do some road running in them.  I've run in the Invo-8s and like them, but the sizing is slightly off for my foot.

I saw that shoe online and thought it looked like one I'd really like!  Is there a regional retailer who carries it so I can try it on?
Try Blue Ridge Mountain Sports (name not quite right) and/or REI.
