On January 14th, 2008 Faybree Jane Neufeld was born healthy and beautiful. She was sent home to the family who had prayed so hard for arrival. Two short weeks later Faybree was rushed to the emergency room barely breathing. After weeks of waiting and dozens of procedures, Faybree was diagnosed with a Surfactant Disorder, an extremely rare genetic mutation known only as ABCA-3. There is no cure for this disease. Hope lied on a double lung transplant and a lifetime of follow-up care. Teams of doctors and researchers across the country networked to make this happen and healing hands of Washington University at The St. Louis Children's Hospital was the answer. The risks were great with this procedure, but the reward is much greater. This was Faybree's only chance for survival.

Faybree was transported to St. Louis, which at that time we were told the flight alone was a huge risk. She did great! Faybree made it  to St. Louis and kept proving everyone wrong! Faybree is a fighter and continues to be a strong little girl. She received her double lung transplant on April 27, 2008 at 3 1/2 months old. Faybree is required to return to St. Louis Children's Hospital for follow up care and multiple tests to see how she is doing twice a year. In between visits we have appointments with her local doctors in VA. Since she has a double lung transplant, Faybree is on multiple rejection drugs which make her immune system suppressed and so she is susceptible to getting sick. Faybree has to wear a mask when she goes out in public in fear of getting sick to protect her. Her prognosis is heart wrenching, which has a survival rate of 20% to age 10. With this statistic at hand, we try to live our lives to the fullest, but with much caution. If you saw Faybree you would have no idea all she has been through in her short 6 years. She is full of life, loves music, swinging on her swing, playing with her two year old brother, and just being around those who love her. Faybree always has a smile on her face and teaches everyone around her what true strength is.
