I have decided to do my first marathon. I have signed up with Sportsbackers. I have recently started my pre-marathon training conditioning.
If you love trails you should check out David Horton and Clark Zealand's races. They are all held close around Lynchburg. The closes one to you is Holiday Lake 50K. You will love there races!!! Lots of swag and good times.

If you are up to doing a 50K, I think there is still room in Promise Land 50K. We normally go up the night before and camp out at the start/finish though some say in a hotel in Bedford or Lynchburg.
Pace? I road race around 7:30 - 8:00, my best 50K + is 5:41, my best 100 mile race is 23:07:56. So not that fast. I call myself a happy mid-packer.
Another great 50K is Capon Valley May 8ish. I am also heading out to NC to run a 24 hour 5 mile loop race May 30. A great way to see what you can do in a really fun setting. There is also one in Sept in Goochland (sp). Check out runraceride.com for other local (Richmond) low key trail races. In Northern Va there is a great 5/10 mile trail series. Google on Backyard Burn.
I am dealing right now with a calf strain but assuming you will slow down some, I would be happy to show you the Bear Creek 10 mile run and my favorite AT run.
